Aftermate

Every game
has a story
in it.

8.Nc3 · Morphy, Paris 1858

Nothing has happened yet. Most of a game is nothing happening.

Left: a real game · Right: the story Aftermate wrote from it

How it works

The chess is computed. Only the story is invented.

Most tools hand your whole game to a language model and hope. Aftermate analyses it first, so the story can invent a character’s motive, their grudges and their last words, but never a death that did not happen.

  1. I

    Your game

Paste a PGN or drop a file. It is parsed in your browser, move by move, with every capture, check and castle recorded.

  2. II

    The engine

Stockfish runs on your machine, not our servers. It scans the whole game, then looks again, deeper, at the moments that decided it.

  3. III

    The moments

Sacrifices, blunders, turning points, last stands. Ranked by how much of the game they carried, and the top handful survive.

  4. IV

    The story

One request writes the whole thing. The game never appears in it, only what the game did to people.

Aftermate Plus

Your board.
Your kingdom.
Your history.

Build a world once: its kingdoms, its politics, the name and temperament of every piece. Every game you play afterwards becomes an event in its history, and the next story is written knowing what the last ones did. Your king’s knight is the same knight in game one and game forty. When he is taken, he stays taken.

King's knight
Sir Rowan, reckless and loyal and young
